Pour passer du discour direct au discours indirect, il faut faire attention à la concordance des temps.

            Discours direct                               Discours indirect

              présent simple        ------------->           prétérit

               prétérit                  --------------->          past perfect

             present perfect        -------------->         past perfect

Discours direct:

" It has been a lonely road, and it is not over yet. I know that my country was not made to be a land of hatred. No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin.”  

Discours indirect :

He said it had been a lonely road and it was not over yet. He knew his country had not been made a land of hatred. No one was was born hating another person because of the colour of his skin.
